About
The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center providing comprehensive resources and training for conducting high-quality research. Their extensive library includes practical resources, evaluation manuals, templates, and tools designed for researchers implementing randomized evaluations and those teaching research methods.
J-PAL maintains key research infrastructure. Recognizing that existing registries weren't well suited for social sciences, they collaborated with the American Economic Association to establish the AEA RCT Registry in 2013. They also host the J-PAL Dataverse, an open repository within Harvard University Dataverse that houses datasets, replication packages, code, documentation, and survey instruments from randomized controlled trials conducted by their affiliated researchers.
J-PAL builds research capacity through multiple pathways, from in-person Executive Education courses to free online resources, including the MITx MicroMasters program in partnership with MIT Economics. Their training programs cover essential research skills including study design, needs assessments, theories of change, outcome measurements, quality control, and monitoring, with many materials freely available online.
