DEFINITION
Accountability in research refers to the responsibility of researchers and institutions to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of research processes and outputs, and to be answerable for their contributions.
CONTEXT
Individual and Collective Responsibility
Accountability operates at two levels that work together: the individual and the institutional. At the individual level, it means keeping accurate records, reporting findings honestly, and taking responsibility for one's contributions to the research. At the institutional level, it means providing the oversight, training, and clear mechanisms for raising and addressing concerns. Neither level works without the other, as researchers cannot be fully accountable without institutional support, and institutions cannot meet their responsibilities without researchers who take their own contributions seriously.
This shared responsibility is why accountability is named as a core principle across international and national research integrity codes and frameworks, including the Singapore Statement [1], the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity [2], the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research [3], the WHO Code of Conduct for Responsible Research [4], and the UK Concordat to Support Research Integrity [5]. Several of these frameworks describe accountability as spanning the full research process, from planning and conduct through to publication and communication, rather than being limited to any one stage.

Accountability is most directly connected to transparency. Researchers and institutions cannot be answerable for work that others cannot examine, so clear documentation and openness about research questions, methods, practices, and findings are what make accountability possible in the first place.
This connection extends to the research record itself: accountability supports reproducibility, traceability, and the willingness to correct errors when they are found. In the context of medical journal publishing, for example, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) states that investigators have a duty to keep the primary data and analytic procedures that support published results for at least ten years, and encourages storing these data in a data repository to ensure their longer-term availability [6].
Accountability also underpins authorship, contributorship, and peer review, with agreement to be responsible for the content of publications included among authorship criteria in several frameworks [2, 6]. At the publication stage, ICMJE guidance sets out specific accountability expectations: authors must disclose financial and non-financial relationships and activities, and must respond to critiques of their work after publication, with deliberate failure to disclose considered a form of misconduct [6]. These expectations reflect that accountability is not only about how research is done, but about how authors remain answerable for it once it enters the public record.
EXAMPLE
Dr. Chen leads a clinical study at his Australian university and publishes the results in a peer-reviewed journal, making the study's data, methods, and analytic code available through an open repository so the work can be independently verified.
Several months later, another research group reports difficulty reproducing one of the study's key findings. Dr. Chen's first reaction is to question the other group's methods and dismiss the challenge. His university applies the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, which establishes a Research Integrity Advisor as a point of confidential guidance [3].
After consulting a senior colleague and the advisor, Dr. Chen agrees that the concern merits a careful response. He and his team re-examine the analysis, identify a data coding error that affected one of the sub-analyses, submit a correction to the journal, and contact the group that raised the concern.
His university supports Dr. Chen throughout the process and uses the case to strengthen its training on data coding practices for future research.
